Zakah on Inherited Money Belonging to Minors Deposited in a Bank

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20501 )
Q: Our father passed away, and after his death, we received a sum of money from the government as compensation for our agricultural land, which was taken for a road. At that time, we were minors who had not yet reached puberty. Our uncle, who was our legal guardian, kept the money in the bank. When we reached puberty, we asked our uncle for the money that belonged to us, and he went and brought it to us. We then began building a house for us to live in. Some of our relatives told us that this money is subject to zakah, and that our uncle did not pay the zakah on our money for as long as it was kept in the bank in his name. The question is: A- Do we have to pay zakah on this money for all the past years, or do we only pay zakah for one year after receiving it? Please note that the amount is (114,740 riyals) only—one hundred and fourteen thousand, seven hundred and forty riyals, and no more. B- If it is obligatory for us to pay the zakah for the past years on this money, do we have to pay it in annual installments? Please note that the money belongs to me, my mother, and my sister, and we do not have a fixed income, as my sister and I are still students in school and we live with my mother and her husband.
A: If the situation is as described, then it is obligatory for each of you to pay the zakah on your share of this money for every year that has passed, and the amount is one-quarter of a tenth, that is, two and a half riyals per hundred. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
