Naming oneself al-Mustafa

Fatwa No. ( 19294 )
All praise is due to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the Honorable Director of Da'wah and Guidance in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , No. (524 \ 21 \ 23), dated 13\11\1417 AH, and its attachments, which included a question about the ruling on naming oneself al-Mustafa , and whether it is obligatory to change the name of one who has named himself so. This was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, No. (6359), dated 16\11\1417 AH. The letter from His Eminence stated: "We refer to Your Eminence the correspondence received from the Governorate of the al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Region, No. (20194 \ 15), dated 8\11\1417 AH, regarding the request submitted by the one called \ al-Mustafa Muhammad Taqi Allah , son of Mayaba, to amend his name in his birth certificate No. (266), dated 17\7\1402 AH, from (al-Mustafa to Mustafa). Since amending the name requires a religious ruling, we request that Your Eminence review it."
After studying the inquiry, the Committee responded that a Muslim should choose an appropriate name for his son such that it does not contradict the pure Shari'ah. The name al-Mustafa contains praise and resembles the description of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so it is not appropriate to name oneself
with it, and it is obligatory to amend the name from al-Mustafa to (Mustafa). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
