What is meant by the remembrance of Allah? Is it meant to be the recitation of the Qur'an alone, or the prayer and the sending of blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the narrated supplications?

The questioner : The last question asks: What is meant by the remembrance of Allah? Is it meant to be the recitation of the Qur'an alone, or the prayer and the sending of blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the narrated supplications?

The Shaykh : The remembrance of Allah, when used in its general sense, includes everything that brings one closer to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), whether that is in the heart, on the tongue, or in the limbs.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for when it is restricted, such as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides فإذا قضيتم الصلاة فاذكروا الله قياماً وقعوداً وعلى جنوبكم
[An-Nisa 4:103]
, what is intended is what the Sunnah brought of the known dhikr, such as the tahlil, the takbir, the tasbih, the tahmid, the seeking of forgiveness, and praising Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) by saying, "O Allah, You are Peace and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor." The important point is that the dhikr for which the servant is praised is broader than the specific dhikr. Dhikr is done with the heart, with the tongue, and with the limbs. Dhikr of Allah with the heart is like reflecting on His legislative and cosmic signs, as well as relying on Him, desiring from Him, turning to Him, loving Him, and the like.
As for dhikr of Allah with the tongue, it is apparent, and it is every word that brings one closer to Allah the Exalted, from the specific dhikr, reciting the Qur'an, enjoining good and forbidding evil, teaching knowledge, and the like. As for with the limbs, it is every action that brings one closer to Allah the Exalted, such as prayer with its standing, sitting, bowing, and prostrating, and charity and spending, and the like. The important point is that we should know the difference between the general, unrestricted dhikr and the specific dhikr. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. These are two questions from the sister 'A 'A M from Iraq, Salah al-Din.
