Fatwa number ( 19349 )
Q: There are people who go to their villages, their farms, and the open countryside during the weekend and official holidays, traveling a distance of more than (80) kilometers from their permanent residence, and they have homes or farms in their villages that belong to them, where they take shelter. Your Eminence: Is the ruling for these people mentioned above the same as the ruling for travelers, such that the rulings of travel apply to them regarding shortening the prayer and combining prayers? And is it permissible for them to pray in their homes and farms while they are near the mosques and can hear the call to prayer, on the grounds that they are travelers?
A: If the situation is as described, then Friday prayer is not obligatory upon them; because they are not in the status of residents with a permanent stay, but rather in the status of travelers. It is prescribed for them to shorten the prayer, and it is permissible for them to combine prayers. It is also permissible for them to pray in their homes and farms if they are in congregation. However, it is better for them to pray with the people if they can hear the call to prayer, and they should complete the prayer and not combine it. Likewise, it is better for them not to combine prayers if they pray in their location. As for the one who is alone, it is obligatory for him to pray in the nearby mosque if he hears the adhan; in order to attain
the virtue of congregation and its obligation upon him, and he must complete the prayer with them and not shorten it, and he must pray Friday prayer with the people. Likewise, the one who intends to stay for more than four days must pray with the congregation in the mosque and complete the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
