Q: We are a group of military personnel who undergo training courses lasting at least one day
Most of it is a sunnah in the Wadi al-Dawasir province, which is more than (80) km from where we live. Work sometimes ends before the midday prayer and sometimes after. Is it permissible for us, if we finish work before the midday prayer, to shorten the midday prayer on the way and combine it with the afternoon prayer? We know that we arrive at our residence before the afternoon prayer. And if we finish work after the midday prayer, is it permissible for us to combine and shorten the afternoon and midday prayers at the workplace? We know that there are some rest areas and stations on the way.
A: If the training location is eighty kilometers or more from your town, it is permissible for you to shorten and combine prayers on the road and at the workplace, unless you intend to stay in the workplace or elsewhere for more than four days. In that case, you must complete the prayers during that stay. You may combine and shorten prayers on the road even if you arrive in your town during the time of the second prayer. If you pray the first prayer on the road and delay the second to pray it at its proper time in the town after arriving, that is better. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
