The questioner : I have been making mistakes toward my father and mother and verbally abusing them for a period of about two years, and this was in moments of anger, but not from the bottom of my heart and I did not mean it. However, I go back and examine my conscience and regret what I did. But I did not neglect any need of the house or their needs in any way; everything was present and the financial situation was generally good. As for the cause of my anger, it was because of my marriage to a woman who created problems between her and my mother and father, and because of that it affected my nerves, my anger, and my great mistakes toward my father and mother. Now, I feel regret for what I did to my father and mother alike. I have resolved to divorce and I actually divorced her, and I was relieved from my problems with my father and mother. Do I carry a sin for what I did, whether with my father and mother or with the wife I divorced, knowing that she did not bear any children? What is the ruling on my action? May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the Righteous, and upon his family, his Companions, and his followers with excellence until the Day of Judgment. The answer to this question is that this questioner’s uttering of words toward his mother and father that indicate irritation and foul words that are not befitting a son toward his parents is a falling into sin and into what Allah has forbidden. Indeed, Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:[Al-Isra 17:23-24] If Allah the Exalted has forbidden a son from saying "uf" to his parents, and "uf" is a word that indicates irritation in a state of their old age, which usually requires bearing a heavy burden for the son and hardship upon him, what then of what is beyond this state? And the regret you feel for what you did, if it is accompanied by the resolve not to return to it and by abandoning what you did, then this is repentance. And Allah the Exalted and Sublime loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves. And whoever repents to Allah with sincere repentance, Allah accepts his repentance.
As for what you did with your wife, where you divorced her because she was the cause of the problems between you and your parents, there is no sin on you and no blame, because divorce, praise be to Allah, is permissible when there is a need for it. And this is one of the most important needs and the most pressing, because whoever tries to separate you from your parents or corrupt the affection between you and them, it is more appropriate to distance oneself from them. And Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:130] So perhaps Allah will guide her to a man with whom she lives a good life, and your divorce of her may be a discipline for her in the future. And perhaps Allah the Exalted will guide you to a woman with whom you and your parents live a good life. Yes.

(23) And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. (24) And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
