The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh. This questioner sent a question without mentioning his name in his message: "I have cut off communication with my brother for several years to avoid problems, and he is older than me as well. What is the ruling? Is my action correct?"

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a person to cut off a relative, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The one who severs ties will not enter Paradise. لا يدخل الجنة قاطع
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1909Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning: one who severs the tie of kinship.
It is obligatory for the believer to maintain the ties of kinship even if they cut him off, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The one who maintains the tie of kinship is not the one who reciprocates, but rather the one who maintains the tie when his kinship is severed. ليس الواصل بالمكافئ ، وإنما الواصل من إذا قطعت رحمه وصلها
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:623
, and it is not permissible for him to respond to the severance of his kinship by them with his own severance of them; rather, he should maintain the tie with them and maintain it with them,
and a giving hand is better than a taking one واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلي
Sahih al-Bukhari 5355
, and if he maintains the tie with them in this state, Allah will support him against them.
