Q: It has become a custom among some people to prostrate after finishing the prayer, making supplication in it . Is that permissible? Is there a basis known for this prostration? Was it transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Was it transmitted from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)?
A: If this prostration is due to forgetfulness that occurred during the prayer, then it is a prescribed prostration, and one says in it what one says in the prostration of prayer, such as saying: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High, and repeats it, then supplicates with whatever one wishes. And if this prostration is for other than forgetfulness in the prayer, then it is an innovated prostration, which is not permissible; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b And this prostration is one that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command and did not practice, so it is rejected. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
