Writing the Basmala and the Glorious Name of Allah on Ornaments
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 19535 )
Q: I seek the religious ruling regarding some ornaments and keepsakes on which the Glorious Name (Allah) and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are written. Since I work in trade and have dealings with some brothers in certain countries, they wish to know whether it is obligatory to write the Glorious Name (Allah) on the right side and (Muhammad) on the left side, and that it is not permissible otherwise. You will find attached to this letter three samples. We want you to give us your opinion on them, and whether it is permissible to make them on (crystal cups) and other such ornaments? Please inform us; may Allah reward you.
A: It is not permissible to write (Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim) on ornamental cups or other utensils that are used; because Bismillah al-Rahman
al-Rahim is a verse from the Qur'an, and writing it on those things exposes it to disrespect. Likewise, it is not permissible to write the Glorious Name on those things; because of the exposure to disrespect therein, nor to write the name of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); because of the disrespect therein, or the exaggeration which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
