Writing the Name of the Glorious One on the Rear of the Car

Fatwa No. ( 19691 )
Q: Some calligraphers who write signs engage in an action that is not praiseworthy, namely writing the Name of the Glorious One on the rear of cars, which leads to it being exposed to filth . We ask your Eminence to issue a ruling on this so that we may be on clear ground.
A : It is not permissible for calligraphers, painters, or others to write the Name of the Glorious One (Allah) or any of the other beautiful names of Allah or His attributes on the rear of cars or elsewhere, and it is not permissible for the owner of the car to adopt this, whether it is adopted for adornment, seeking blessing, as a means of reminder and taking heed, or the like of what some of the common people and the ignorant believe; because that is a religious innovation with no basis in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah has not commanded us to worship Him in that way, and because of the desecration of the names and attributes of Allah therein, and the failure to sanctify them from what is not befitting them and the insult to them. And it may
lead its owner to associating partners with Allah by taking it as a talisman, and believing that it brings benefit and wards off harm merely by its writing. The names and attributes of Allah were not revealed by Allah to be made into designs on devices, signs, or cars. Had that been prescribed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would have indicated it to us and guided us to do it. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) revealed His names and attributes so that His servants would know Him by them and affirm them for Him, as came from Him and from His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and so that they would believe in the perfection and majesty they contain, and praise Him with what is befitting Him, and turn to Him with them in their supplication in times of ease and hardship. It is obligatory for every believer to believe in them, affirm them, and count them in creed and action, and to preserve them in word and meaning, affirming them as befits His majesty, and as they came without distortion, denial of the divine attributes, comparing Allah to creation, asking how an attribute is, or likening Allah to creation, and to preserve their sanctity from desecration and sanctify them from what is not befitting them. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:180] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
