The Ruling on Ihdad

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourteenth question from Fatwa number ( 606 )
Q 14: What is the reason for ihdad, and is it a recommended practice, an obligation, or a fard; because a woman observes ihdad when her husband dies?
A 14: It is obligatory (fard) for a woman whose husband has died to observe ihdad for the duration of the waiting period after death; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to observe mourning for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom it is four months and ten days.لا يحل لامرأة تؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن تحد على ميت فوق ثلاث إلا على زوج أربعة أشهر وعشرا
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 65:67
And it is obligatory for the Muslim to obey Allah and His Messenger in every command and prohibition, whether he knows the wisdom behind it or not, for Allah is All-Knowing of what benefits His servants and what sets their affairs right, so He prescribes for them what achieves that. Among the wisdom in mourning is that the hearts of the deceased's relatives are soothed, their feelings are considered, and the perfection
of preserving the rights of the deceased during the waiting period. And Allah knows best. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
