Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 13976 )
Q1: Is it permissible for me to cut off ties with my family for more than a year; due to my financial circumstances?
A1: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded maintaining family ties and forbade cutting them off. He the Exalted said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment
[Al-Isra 17:23]
And He the Exalted said:
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives
[An-Nahl 16:90]
And He the Exalted said:
(22) So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? (23) Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
[Muhammad 47:22-23]
Maintaining family ties is done through visiting, greeting, providing financial assistance to those in need among them, and inquiring about their conditions. However, if a person is unable to visit
due to the distance of his family's country and his lack of means, there is no blame on him for not traveling to them, provided he maintains ties through correspondence and whatever other means of connection he is able to do. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
