Q: What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding a man who hates this worldly life with the utmost hatred, and asks Allah to kill him if that is better for him, and waits for the disliked thing with complete patience, which is death?
A: It is not permissible for a Muslim to hate life and despair of the relief and good that are with Allah the Exalted. It is obligatory for him to be patient with what he encounters of Allah's decrees, to seek reward from Allah the Exalted for the calamities he suffers, and to ask Him, the Exalted, to
avert them from him, to help him and reward him for what He decrees upon him, and to await relief from Him, the Exalted. He, the Exalted, said:[Ash-Sharh 94:5-6] It is disliked for a Muslim to hope for death due to a hardship that befalls him, such as illness, worldly distress, or otherwise. In (the two Sahihs) it is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:1450 , and because the absolute hope for death involves objection and defiance of the divine decree, whereas the situation mentioned in the hadith is a type of entrustment and submission to the decree. What befalls a Muslim in this world of calamities is an expiation for him, if he seeks reward for them with Allah the Exalted and does not complain, and it is an awakening of his heart from heedlessness and a lesson for the future. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

لا يتمنين أحدكم الموت لضر نزل به، فإن كان لا بد فاعلاً فليقل: اللهم أحيني ما كانت الحياة خيرًا لي، وتوفني إذا كانت الوفاة خيرًا لي
