What are the limits of obeying one's parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 3405 )
Q: My dear brother: Allah the Mighty and Majestic has commanded us in His Noble Book to obey our parents and be dutiful to them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us against undutifulness to them with the strongest warning. So what are the limits of obeying them? My mother is a woman from the general Muslim community, and she is ignorant of many matters. Allah has blessed us with abundant wealth, praise be to Allah, and we wish to engage in matters of trade, buying, and selling. She prevents us from carrying out some of these works and says, for example, "Partner with so-and-so, and do not partner with the other." She does not know the matters of buying and selling, or the people and their dealings. So do we obey her in this, or do we disobey her? And if we disobey her, are we considered undutiful? Likewise, she wants to marry us to some of those she likes, even though we see that marrying someone other than the one she wants is better
for us in our religion and our worldly affairs, and we always strive to choose a woman of the same religion from the daughters of our brothers in Allah, from among the people of virtue and righteousness. So do we obey her, or do we disobey her? And are we considered undutiful to her in this, or not?

A: First: Obeying the parents is obligatory, and being dutiful to them and doing good to them is likewise obligatory, due to the texts of the Qur'an and the Sunnah that have come regarding this. This is within the limits of what is known and within one's capability, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Second: Whatever of your matters relates to permissible things and ordinary affairs in which you understand the benefit, and your mother does not understand that, nor the benefits that result from entering into them and dealing in them, you are not obligated to obey her in them, and you are not considered undutiful to her by disobeying her in that, due to the generality of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
You know best the affairs of your worldly life.أنتم أعلم بأمور دنياكم
. Third: You are not obligated to obey her in marrying the person she wants, if the matter is as you described, that you strive to choose a woman of the same religion from the daughters of your brothers in Allah, from among the people of virtue and righteousness. You are not considered undutiful to her by disobeying her in that. However, it is obligatory upon you in all circumstances to consider her feelings with good manners that reassure her heart and make her pleased with you, and to avoid harsh manners, while proceeding with what you see to be the stronger benefit over what she saw and you affirmed to be contrary to it.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
