Q: I am a first-year university student in the Faculty of Commerce at Alexandria University , and I am trying to adhere to the law of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), but my family objects to my letting my beard grow and insist on shaving it. I do not care about what people say, but my father and mother insist on shaving it with all their might. My mother says: "If you want me to be pleased with you, shave it." Sometimes she says: "I will not be pleased with you as long as this beard is on you." Sometimes she says: "I will leave you the house if you shave it." My father threatens and warns me: "My son, shave it, because it causes you problems and tires you and your family." And so, my father's and mother's pleading with me, and their threatening me with this, and their withholding the profit from me and their displeasure with me, pains me, and this profit is contingent on shaving. I am now extremely confused between pleasing my parents and holding fast to this Sunnah; sometimes I lean toward pleasing them and sometimes I lean toward the Sunnah. I want to combine the two, but this is impossible. I have tried every means to convince them, but they insisted on shaving, especially since they are Bedouins from the Awlad Ali tribes , Matrouh Governorate the Western Desert , and we ask your eminence to issue a ruling:
Should I let it grow or not? If letting it grow causes their displeasure with me, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: , or should I commit the sin of shaving it and gain their pleasure? May Allah reward you with good.
A : If the situation is as you described, then be good to your parents and treat them in this world with kindness, but do not obey them in their command for you to shave your beard; for it is established in the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Mishkat al-Masabih 3696 . So prioritize the obedience of Allah and His Messenger over their obedience. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
