Lowering the gaze and guarding the private parts while working

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 15754 )
Q: I am an Egyptian young man, and my job is as a paramedic or nurse, and this is what I want to ask about: the nature of my job compels me to look at
women, and to deal with them at times, and to examine them for the purpose of first aid or nursing care
, and this is one part of the question. The second part is: in my city of Alexandria, in the summer, I work on the beaches, where areas are designated for first aid, such as cases of drowning and wounds and similar emergency situations. If you know that in the sea there are naked women who do not fear Allah, as well as men, and that I lower my gaze as much as possible, but they come even to my place of work, what do you advise me to do and what should I do? Should I leave this profession, which is the only job I know, or what should I do? Guide me to the right path.

A: It is obligatory for the Muslim to fear Allah Mighty and Majestic, to lower his gaze, to guard his private parts, and to avoid all means that lead to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and bring one closer to evil. Allah the Exalted said:
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.وَلاَ تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلا
[Al-Isra 17:32]
This is a prohibition against committing lewdness and against all means that lead to it. Among the most severe of these is looking at women, especially those who are uncovered and naked. It is not permissible for a woman to be treated by a male doctor, nor for a man to be treated by a female doctor, except in a case of extreme necessity, where there is no female doctor for women and no male doctor for men. What we advise you to do is:
to stay away from places of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and to seek your livelihood in a profession other than this one. Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
And if necessity calls for you to treat women, let that be within narrow limits, without being alone with the woman, and let the looking be restricted to the site of treatment and to the extent of the need, and let nothing of the woman’s body be uncovered except the site of treatment. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
