Fatwa No. ( 1927 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed the question submitted by the citizen (...) through the honorable judge of the Salil Court to His Eminence the General President, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (2 \ 881) and date 19 \ 4 \ 1398 AH. Its text is: "One of the citizens of Salil came to us asking, saying: 'My daughter’s husband has passed away, and she is required to observe the waiting period, and she is a student at school. Does the Shari'ah permit her to continue her studies or not? He said: Perhaps she can wear some of her clothes that are free from perfume and adornment, so we ask your Eminence to issue a ruling for him."
The Committee responded as follows: It is obligatory for the wife whose husband has died to observe the waiting period and remain in seclusion in the house where her husband died, for four months and ten days, if she is not pregnant, and she must not spend the night anywhere else. She must avoid anything that beautifies her or invites people to look at her, such as perfume, kohl with antimony, clothes of adornment, decorating her body, and the like of what makes her attractive. It is permissible for her to go out during the day for a need that requires it. Accordingly, the student about whom the question was asked may go to school for her need to receive lessons, understand issues, and acquire knowledge, provided she adheres to
avoiding what the widow observing the waiting period for death must avoid, which is anything that attracts men to her or invites them to propose to her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
