The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 19307 )
Q4: What are the rights of a wife over her husband, and what are the rights
of the husband over his wife?
A4: The principle regarding the rights between spouses is that just as the wife has rights, she also has obligations toward the husband. This is summarized by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:228] and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1163Sahih (Darussalam) Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good, authentic hadith, and Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated something similar.
And further evidence for this is what Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, saying:Mishkat al-Masabih 3259 A good hadith narrated by Abu Dawud . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q4: What are the rights of a wife over her husband, and what are the rights
of the husband over his wife?
A4: The principle regarding the rights between spouses is that just as the wife has rights, she also has obligations toward the husband. This is summarized by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
And indeed I order you to be good to the women, for they are but captives with you over whom you have no power than that, except if they come with manifest Fahishah (evil behavior). If they do that, then abandon their beds and beat them with a beating that is not harmful. And if they obey you then you have no cause against them. Indeed you have rights over your women, and your women have rights over you. As for your rights over your women, then they must not allow anyone whom you dislike to treat on your bedding (furniture), nor to admit anyone in your home that you dislike. And their rights over you are that you treat them well in clothing them and feeding them.
And further evidence for this is what Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, saying:
he asked: “Messenger of God, what right can any wife demand of her husband?’’ He replied, “That you should give her food when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, not strike her on the face, and do not revile her or separate from her except in the house”
