Advice to the husband who falls short in the rights of his wife

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A sister of ours sent a message saying (M. A. A.), she is Egyptian, and in her message she says: My husband is Egyptian and works in Riyadh. I married him two years ago and I have endured loneliness and being far from home during that time. He goes down to his work very early and returns after midday, approximately half an hour or less, to have lunch, then goes down again, and I do not see him until the middle of the night. During the period from the afternoon prayer to the night, he spends it between work and reading with his friends. I have advised him to give every right its due, for Allah has a right, his self has a right, and his wife has a right to sit with him and be comforted by him. He comes home tired to sleep and does not comfort me, not even with the kind words a wife expects. This undoubtedly has a bad effect on my psyche, and he dislikes talking with me about this topic much. He is content with just sitting at home on Thursdays only, and this undoubtedly affects my behavior, so I have become angry and agitated and have mentioned it to him many times. His only answer was: "This is life." What do you advise me to do? And what is the solution to this problem that I have suffered from and endured for two years? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: First, we advise you to be patient, speak kindly, and use good manners with him, and to pray for his guidance and success. We tell you: you have done well and have mentioned the truth to him. He must be fair to his wife and give her her rights through kindness, sitting with her, and talking to her, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and as he advised his Ummah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said:
Treat women with kindnessاستوصوا بالنساء خيرًا
, and he said to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr when he turned away from his wife:
Indeed your self has a right upon you, your Lord has a right upon you, your guest has a right upon you, and your family has a right upon you. So give each the right they are due.إن لنفسك عليك حقًا، ولأهلك عليك حقًا، ولضيفك عليك حقًا، فأعط كل ذي حق حقه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2413Sahih (Darussalam)
. When Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) visited Abu al-Darda' and saw some asceticism and worship in his home, and that he was not paying attention to his family, he advised him. Abu al-Darda's wife had complained to him that he had no need for the world, so he understood from her words that he was not paying attention to her as he should. So Salman advised him and ordered him to sleep with his family until the end of the night and then get up to pray, and ordered him to fast sometimes and break his fast sometimes. Salman said to him: "Your soul has a right over you, your family has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you, so give every right-holder his right." Then Salman went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him and Abu al-Darda' what had happened, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Salman spoke the truth, Salman spoke the truthصدق سلمان، صدق سلمان
.
It is obligatory for your husband to fear Allah, to be just to you, to care for you, and to treat you well. He should work during the time designated for work, then come home and interact with his family and talk to them. This is how it should be until his wife feels secure with him and until there is comfort and relaxation between them. For the wife is the husband’s tranquility; Allah made the wife a source of tranquility for the husband
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in themوَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا
[Ar-Rum: 21]. So you, O husband, must fear Allah, be good to your family, devote some time to them, and comfort them with kind words, playfulness, good reception, and a pleasant face; for she has a right over you. And so does your guest, and so does your body. So give your Lord his right, give work its right, give yourself its right, and give your wife her right. Strive in this, ask her forgiveness, and say kind words to her about where you fall short so that she may forgive you. You must be gentle, wise, and speak kindly. Do not be violent or harsh. This is what is required of you, O brother. And you, O sister in Allah, must be patient and seek reward from Allah, and address him in the best manner. Allah will make for you a way out, an exit, and a good outcome. Yes.
