Fatwa number ( 11534 )
Q: I am currently 49 years old. My father passed away, and I did not know him, for I married after my father's death. I have no brothers, nor any relatives other than my cousins. I married a man and was blessed with ten children, sons and daughters. Four of my children have married. Since I came to know myself, I have had vitiligo on my hands and feet. My husband has been threatening me with this disease for 22 years, ever since I married him. Whenever he is angry with me, he says, "Only I have been patient with you," or he curses me, saying, "May Allah afflict you more than what is in you." He constantly threatens me with marriage [to another woman], and I have not prevented him from it. He leaves the house for many days and does not tell me where he is going or where he is. When he returns, I tell him that he is wasting himself and his children with him. He shouts and says, "It is only you who have wasted my children." On some days, he calls me until I come to him, and he says, "Go away from me." And if I tell him, "Discipline your children while they are young," he stands up and shouts at them, saying, "I do not want to see you here." My mother died after her second husband, and she used to come some days
to my place, and she passes by us without saying salam to her. She is an elderly woman, and she gets upset with me when I do not visit her. I am unable to go to her, and he prevents me from going. When she comes to us, he says, “Send her back to her family.” She has no children other than me. I go to the Friday prayer on some days without my husband’s knowledge. I do not know whom to obey, my mother or my husband. I sometimes go out to the neighbors, and I do not go out except when he is angry or when my children are angry. The neighbors are kind. Is there any sin on me for going out to them? I cannot live with him now. If I leave him, I do not want to separate from my children. Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.

A: First: It is obligatory for you and your husband to treat each other with kindness, using good words and showing kindness to one another in speech and action. Second: Each of you should care for the rights of the other and fulfill the obligations incumbent upon them, and be patient with the shortcomings that come from the other, so that the marriage may last. Third: It is not permissible for a woman to leave her husband’s house without his permission. If he prevents her from visiting her relatives, there is no sin on her; rather, the sin is on the husband who prevents her, and she has done nothing wrong.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
