Fatwa number ( 6553 )
Q: I am a young man working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , and my income is limited, sufficient for necessities, and the costs of living, praise be to Allah. I have performed Hajj for myself three times, praise be to Allah, due to the ease and convenience of Hajj for residents here within the Kingdom , whether for work or otherwise. My father is in Egypt and has not yet performed Hajj, due to his lack of funds for the Hajj. He is kind, healthy, and in good health, but due to the lack of funds for Hajj and my limited income, as I mentioned before, can I perform Hajj on his behalf? A friend told me: If I perform Hajj after that—meaning after
the inability of my father to perform Hajj, whether from his own means or with my assistance, would make my Hajj not permissible? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

A: If the situation is as you described, that your father is healthy and in good condition but cannot perform Hajj due to financial inability, then Hajj is not obligatory upon him; because of the saying of the Exalted and Majestic:
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a wayوَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا
[Ali 'Imran 3:97]
, and it is not valid for you to perform Hajj on his behalf, nor for anyone else. However, it is prescribed for you, if you are able to provide the funds for his Hajj, to assist him with that so that he may perform Hajj himself. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
