Fatwa number ( 9240 )
Q: I am 45 years old, and I have been suffering from a disease for twenty years, rheumatism. It sometimes eases and sometimes worsens, but for the past six years the disease has become severe, and I have become disabled. I cannot stand or sit except with great difficulty and sometimes with the help of others. When I stand, I cannot straighten up; rather, I rely on Allah, then on a cane. Likewise, when walking, I cannot prostrate, so I pray while sitting. I live alone in my house, and before Maghrib every day
I go to my uncle’s house, which is about fifty meters from my house. When I arrive, they help me sit down, and likewise when I stand up. After 'Isha' prayer, I return to my house, and so on. Some of my brothers advised me to pray in the nearby mosque, saying: “You come to your uncle’s house every day.” I explained to him that I cannot pray except while sitting, and that it is difficult for me when I enter the mosque and want to sit down, as well as when I stand up to leave the mosque. He said: “I will place a wooden board in the mosque to help you stand up and sit down, and the worshippers will also help you.” I said to him: “This would cause inconvenience in the mosque and is difficult for me.” However, he was not convinced and kept repeating this advice. I ask you to issue a ruling on what is required of me, and I also ask for a ruling on Hajj, as I have not performed Hajj until now. May Allah preserve you and take care of you, and not deprive you of reward; indeed, He is Able to do all things. Note: I have no financial income other than the social security, which I spend on buying medication and my personal expenses.
A: If the matter is as you described, then you should pray in your house due to the excuse. Likewise, regarding Hajj, if you are unable to perform Hajj yourself and you do not find the funds for Hajj, then Hajj is not obligatory upon you until you find the funds. If you find them, you must appoint someone to perform Hajj on your behalf. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
