Fatwa No. ( 4210 ):
Q: I read at the end of [Tafsir Ibn Kathir] his statement: "He mentioned the transmitted supplication for memorizing the Qur'an and warding off forgetfulness - with a shortened chain - fromIbn AbbasHe said: He saidAli ibn Abi Talib: O Messenger of Allah, the Qur'an slips from my chest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will teach you words by which Allah will benefit you and benefit whoever you teach them." He said: Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom. He said: "Pray one night
Friday four rak'ahs. In the first rak'ah, recite al-Fatihah and Yasin, in the second, al-Fatihah and (Ha-Mim) al-Dukhan, in the third, al-Fatihah and (Ha-Mim) al-Sajdah, and in the fourth, al-Fatihah and Tabaarak al-Mufassal. When you finish the tashahhud, praise Allah, extol Him, send blessings upon the Prophets, and seek forgiveness for the believers. Then say: (O Allah, have mercy on me by causing me to abandon sins forever as long as You keep me alive, and have mercy on me from what I do not need, and grant me good insight into what pleases You of me. O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty and Honor and the Power that cannot be matched, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your Majesty and the light of Your Face, to make my heart cling to the love of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me to recite it in the manner that pleases You of me. And I ask You to illuminate my sight with the Book, to loosen my tongue with it, to relieve my heart with it, to expand my chest with it, to employ my body with it, to strengthen me for it, and to help me with it, for no one helps me with good but You, and no one succeeds in it but You). Do this on three Fridays, or five, or seven, and you will memorize it by the permission of Allah, and no believer has ever erred." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came after that on seven Fridays, and he informed him of his memorization of the Qur'an and hadith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A believer, and the Lord of the Ka'bah, Allah taught Abu al-Hasan, Allah taught Abu al-Hasan." This is the context of al-Tabarani . So it is hoped that Your Eminence the Shaykh will answer these questions: 1 - Is the hadith authentic or weak?
2 - Is a weak, mursal, or mu'allaq hadith, or other such, acted upon in acts of worship like this hadith if it is weak; and especially the worship of prayer and its great virtue? 3 - Does this not affect the creed?
A: First: This hadith, Ibn Kathir said about it: It is evident in its strangeness, rather its denunciation. This is the end of Ibn Kathir's words. And we do not know a path among its paths that indicates its authenticity. Second: Hadiths that do not constitute a proof are not relied upon in legislation. We advise you to return to reading the terminology of hadith, and we specify from that [Mukhtasar Ibn al-Salah], and [Nukhbat al-Fikr] by Ibn Hajar, and its explanation [Nuzhat al-Nazhar] by him as well, so that you can be able to know in detail what is relied upon from hadiths and what is not relied upon. Third: There is no harm in using this supplication; because it is a good supplication, there is no legal objection in it, but without the mentioned prayer; due to the lack of evidence for its prescription. As for the supplication, there is no harm in a person supplicating with whatever he wishes from supplication that has no legal objection in it, even if it is not narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); for what is established in the two Sahihs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he taught his companions the tashahhud he said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:203, and in another wording: He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 402b, and in
the authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani) and he did not specify one supplication over another, and the hadiths in this meaning are many. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
