Fatwa number ( 4028 ):
Q: In Uganda , if a person wants to call upon his Lord specifically for the expansion of sustenance, he invites some of the learned men, and they come to him, and each one brings his mushaf, and they begin to recite. One recites Surat Yasin, because it is the heart of the Qur'an, and a second recites Surat al-Kahf, and a third recites Surat al-Waqi'ah or al-Rahman, or al-Dukhan, al-Ma'arij, Nun, Tabaarak, meaning: al-Mulk, Muhammad, al-Fath, and the like of the Qur'anic surahs, and so on and so on. They do not recite from al-Baqarah or al-Nisa, and after that they make du'a. Is this method prescribed in Islam? And if it is not, where is the prescribed method, with its evidence?
A: Reciting the Qur'an with reflection on its meanings is among the best of acts of drawing near to Allah, and calling upon Allah and seeking refuge in Him for success in good and for the expansion of sustenance and the like of these types of good is a prescribed act of worship. However, reciting in the manner described in the question, by distributing specific surahs of the Qur'an among several people, each of whom recites a surah in order to then make du'a for the expansion of sustenance and the like, is a religious innovation (bid'ah); because that has not been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by word or deed, nor from any of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), nor from the imams of the Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them). The good lies in following those who came before, and the evil lies in innovating what the later generations have introduced. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Our lord gets down every night to the heaven of this world when a third night remains and says: (Is there anyone) who prays to Me so that I may accept his prayer? (Is there anyone) who asks of Me so that I may give him? (Is there anyone) who asks for my forgiveness so that I may forgive him?
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.
