The questioner : The honorable Shaykh says: I owe an expiation due to a traffic accident in which a person died. I have paid the blood money to the deceased’s family. I began fasting from the second of Shawwal. The inquiry is: Do I fast until the first of Dhu al-Hijjah or until the second of Dhu al-Hijjah, even if the month is short and does not reach thirty days? And is it permissible for me to continue fasting after the expiation by fasting the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, or should I separate them by breaking my fast for one day and then fasting the ten days, due to my ignorance of this? I ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you abundantly.
The Shaykh : Yes. I say, may Allah bless him. I ask Allah the Exalted to accept from him, and to turn to us and to him in repentance. If he fasts the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the two months are complete. The second day of Dhu al-Hijjah is the day he breaks his fast. If he continues and intends to fast the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, that is good. He does not need to separate the expiation and the fasting of Dhu al-Hijjah by breaking his fast for one day. Rather, he may continue and persist. May Allah help us and him. Yes.
The questioner : The remaining part of the paragraph says: Do I have a reward for this fasting, meaning the expiation, and does it expiate my sins?
The Shaykh : There is no doubt that he has a reward. He has a great reward, because Allah the Exalted commanded him to do so. It is an expiation. For this reason, he said:[Al-Baqarah 2:196] Allah Mighty and Majestic said: [An-Nisa 4:92]. Yes.
