The questioner : This listener, A.A.S. from Sana'a in Yemen, mentions in his message, O honorable Shaykh, and says that he is a young Muslim who praises Allah for this blessing. He says: My age does not exceed twenty-seven. I was afflicted with an illness eleven years ago and went to several hospitals in Yemen hoping for a cure, but to no avail. I entrusted my affair to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for He is the One capable of curing me and relieving my distress. He says: The believer has only what Allah has decreed for him. He says: My father insists that I marry, but I refuse out of fear that the illness will worsen, especially since I have had it for this long period. Is there a sin in my refusal against my father? We ask for guidance, may you be rewarded?
The Shaykh : The words of this questioner are good in that he praised his Lord for guiding him to Islam and entrusted his affair to Allah regarding the illness that befell him. Thus, the believer should, when Allah grants him guidance and uprightness, praise Allah for that and ask Him for steadfastness upon it until he meets his Lord, Mighty and Majestic. Likewise, the believer should, when struck by a calamity, entrust his affair to Allah, but he should not abandon the means that Allah the Exalted has made causes for removing this calamity.
As for his father's insistence on his marriage and his refusal of it, what I see is that he should not refrain from marriage as long as his illness is not feared to spread to the wife. What I see is that he should marry, for perhaps there is good and a cure for this illness in his marriage. Some things may not occur to one's mind as being beneficial and effective, yet they are beneficial and effective by the permission of Allah. My advice to him is to marry in obedience to the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his sayingMishkat al-Masabih 3080 and in obedience to his father who was insisting on his marriage, unless he has an illness that is feared to spread to the wife, in which case he would be harming her. In that case, he may refrain, but he should explain the reason to his father so that his father is reassured and pleased.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
