The questioner : The questioner, R.S.R. from Taif, says in this question that she is a woman who suffers greatly from the poor treatment of her husband’s father toward her. She says, “I treat him well, but he treats me badly, using foul language and fabricating things I never said. The same is true of his son, who is my husband; he is harsh in speech, sharp-tongued, and frequently curses and insults.”
The Shaykh : There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
The questioner : And he raises his voice for a reason and without a reason. So what do you advise me to do, O honorable Shaykh? Should I prevent my husband’s father from entering my home, meaning should I ask for a separate house for myself? Please note that my husband has another wife, and she mentions that he is the only son of this man, who is ninety years old. Please give us a ruling, and may Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : What I see is that she should be patient and seek reward from her Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and that she should meet evil with good. For Allah the Exalted said in His Book:[Fussilat 41:34-35] Allah Mighty and Majestic says: [Al-Mu'minun 23:96] and He did not say “repel evil with good.” He said: [Al-An'am 6:152] If this happens and a person obeys the command of his Lord, enmity turns into friendship and kinship, as if he were a close relative with strong friendship. And the One who said this is the Lord of the worlds, in Whose hand are the reins of affairs, and there is no heart among the hearts of the children of Adam but that it is between two of His fingers. Do not be surprised that enmity turns into friendship and that hatred turns into love, for the One who said this is Allah, the Lord of the worlds. So I advise this woman, who described herself as she did, and who is truly in a miserable state, to be patient, to seek reward, and to wait for relief. And let her know that she is not the only one who experiences such things; many women complain about their husbands, their husbands’ fathers, and their husbands’ mothers. But with patience and certainty, Allah makes matters easy. So my advice to her is to be patient and seek reward.
As for my advice to her husband and his father, it is that they should fear Allah Mighty and Majestic regarding this miserable woman, if what she mentioned in her question is the reality. They should fear Allah Mighty and Majestic, and their hearts should be broader than her heart, and they should not hold her accountable for everything that comes from her, if anything comes from her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1468b meaning he does not dislike and hate. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: .
So my advice to this husband and his father is to fear Allah regarding this woman, and to meet her evil, if she does evil, with good. And Allah the Exalted is with the patient. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, O honorable Shaykh.
The Shaykh : There is no power and no strength except with Allah.

The Shaykh : What I see is that she should be patient and seek reward from her Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and that she should meet evil with good. For Allah the Exalted said in His Book:
(34) And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. (35) But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].
Repel, by [means of] what is best
ادفَع بِالَّتي هِيَ أَحسَنُin a way that is best
بِالَّتي هِيَ أَحسَنُAs for my advice to her husband and his father, it is that they should fear Allah Mighty and Majestic regarding this miserable woman, if what she mentioned in her question is the reality. They should fear Allah Mighty and Majestic, and their hearts should be broader than her heart, and they should not hold her accountable for everything that comes from her, if anything comes from her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another.
لا يفرَك مؤمن مؤمنة إن كره منها خلقا رضي منها خلقا ءاخرA believing man does not dislike
لا يفرَكFear Allah regarding women, for they were created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its top. If you try to straighten it, you will break it, and if you leave it as it is, you will benefit from its crookedness. And her divorce is her breaking.
اتقوا الله في النساء فإنهن خلقن من ضلع وإن أعوج شيء في الضلع أعلاه إن ذهبت تُقيمها كسرتها وإن استمتعت بها استمتعت بها على عِوج وكسرها طلاقهاSo my advice to this husband and his father is to fear Allah regarding this woman, and to meet her evil, if she does evil, with good. And Allah the Exalted is with the patient. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, O honorable Shaykh.
