Is zakah obligatory on us, given that a lunar year has not passed since we purchased the machines and we have incurred a loss?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is zakah obligatory on us, given that a lunar year has not passed since we purchased the machines and we have incurred a loss?

The Shaykh : If these machines are for trade, then zakah is obligatory on you, even if a lunar year has not passed since their purchase, provided that a lunar year has passed since the capital with which you bought the machines. This is because trade goods are exchanged by people, and a lunar year is not required for them; the lunar year applies to the original capital. Once the lunar year for the capital is completed, zakah becomes obligatory.
As for if you purchased the machines to work with them, but then you preferred other machines to them, or you stopped plowing with them or using them, and then you sold them, in that case, the lunar year for zakah begins anew. So, if the lunar year is completed after their sale and the receipt of their price, then zakah becomes obligatory on you.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
