The questioner : His EminenceThe Shaykh : What is the ruling on our saying: "By your life," or "By the life of Allah," or "By the oath of Allah," or "In your trust," or "In your pledge"?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible to swear an oath except by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) or by one of His attributes, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever has to take an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent. من كان حالفا فليحلف بالله أو ليصمت
Sahih al-Bukhari 2679
and his saying:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk من حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
This includes saying "By the life of Allah," for that is swearing by the life of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As for swearing "By your life" or "By my life," that was reported from the Salaf because its phrasing is not the phrasing of an oath, so it does not fall under the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk من حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
However, it is better to refrain from it, and swearing by Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) or by one of His attributes is what is prescribed.
