What is the ruling on one who prays at home while he hears the adhan in the mosque? Is his prayer valid?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We return to a message sent by a listener of the program. The listener used the initials J-A-J for his name from Jazan. He says: “Your Eminence, what is the ruling on one who prays at home while he hears the adhan? Is his prayer valid?”

The Shaykh : There is scholarly disagreement among the scholars on this issue.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Some of them said that his prayer is not valid because he left an obligatory part of the prayer. Others said that his prayer is valid, but he is sinful and has missed the reward and goodness. This is the more correct opinion, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Prayer said in a congregation is twenty-seven degrees more excellent than prayer said by a single person. صلاة الجماعة أفضل من صلاة الفذ بسبع وعشرين درجة
Sahih Muslim 650a
This indicates that the prayer at home alone is valid, because if it were not valid, it would have no merit whatsoever. However, he is sinful for leaving the congregational prayer without an excuse, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not respond, he has no prayer, except one who has an excuse. من سمع النداء فلم يُجب فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:352
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him)
I was thinking of commanding that the call to prayer be given, then I would tell a man to lead the people in prayer, then I would go out with some other men carrying bundles of wood, and go to people who do not attend the prayer, and burn their houses down around them.
Sunan Ibn Majah 791Sahih (Darussalam)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not threaten with this except for the leaving of something obligatory, and he would not narrate this except to warn and instill fear. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
