The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-01a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya and Shu'ayb ibn Furukh both narrated to us from 'Abd al-Warith. Yahya said: 'Abd al-Warith ibn Sa'id narrated to us from Abu al-Tayyakh al-Dab'i, who narrated to us from Anas ibn Malik:
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in al-Madinah and stayed in the upper part of al-Madinah in a tribe called Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf. He remained with them for fourteen nights. Then he sent for the leaders of Banu al-Najjar, and they came wearing their swords. He said: "It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his mount, with Abu Bakr riding behind him, and the leaders of Banu al-Najjar surrounding him, until he stopped at the courtyard of Abu Ayyub." He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray wherever the prayer time caught him, in the grazing grounds of the sheep. Then he ordered the construction of the mosque. He sent for the leaders of Banu al-Najjar, and they came. He said: 'O Banu al-Najjar, sell me this garden of yours.' They said: 'No, by Allah, we do not seek a price for it except for Allah.' Anas said: 'It contained, as I say, palm trees, the graves of the polytheists, and ruins.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the palm trees to be cut down, the graves of the polytheists to be dug up, and the ruins to be leveled. They arranged the palm trunks as the qiblah and made its two sides of stone. They were chanting and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with them, and they were saying: 'O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter *** so support the Ansar and the Muhajireen.'"

The Shaykh : This hadith is about the construction of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque, and it is part of history. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated from Makkah to al-Madinah by the permission and command of Allah. He arrived in al-Madinah and stayed in the upper part of al-Madinah in a tribe called Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf, in the area of Quba, and remained there for fourteen nights. Then he sent for the leaders of Banu al-Najjar, who are his maternal uncles, and they came wearing their swords to show their respect and honor for him (peace and blessings be upon him) and that they were ready to defend him and his religion. He said:
It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his mount, with Abu Bakr riding behind him.
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 5:15
The leaders of Banu al-Najjar were around him, and the markets were crowded with people and children saying, "This is Muhammad, Allah is the Greatest." It was a wonderful sight and a great scene. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, everything was illuminated with a spiritual, heart, and facial illumination. The hearts of the believers were enlightened, their faces were enlightened, and the entire Ummah saw that this was a witnessed day. If we were to have a king from our kings arrive, the people would celebrate him, so how much more so when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrives? How would the celebration be? He said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray wherever the prayer time caught him, and he would pray in the grazing grounds of the sheep.
As for the grazing grounds of camels, prayer in them was prohibited. Then he ordered the construction of the mosque. This indicates that it is from the Sunnah to begin with the mosque before anything else, because it is the gathering place of the Ummah and the place of worship. For example, when we want to plan a dead land, what do we start with? Mosques. We look for suitable locations for mosques and prepare them. This is obligatory. But unfortunately, people are affected by greed, and you find that a large plan has only one mosque or no mosque at all, so that the government is forced to buy the land for the mosque and compensate the landowner. This is undoubtedly an error and a loss of virtue. He says in this hadith:
and sent for the chiefs of Banu al-Najjar, and they came (to him). He (the Holy Prophet) said to them: O Banu al-Najjar, sell these lands of yours to me.
Sahih Muslim 524a
meaning, sell it to me for a price. They said, may Allah be pleased with them:
By Allah, we will not ask its price except from Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2774
This is part of their share and portion. Then he said:
There (in these lands) were trees and graves of the polytheists, and ruins.
Sahih Muslim 524a
meaning, ruined things that are not worth attention.
The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) ordered that the trees should be cut, and the graves should be dug out, and the ruins should be levelled. The trees (were thus) placed in rows towards the qibla and the stones were set on both sides of the door
Sahih Muslim 524a
The sides of the mosque, meaning its edges on which it is built, they made of stone. He said: "They were chanting and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with them, and they were saying:"
O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so support the Ansar and the Muhajireen.
