The Shaykh : In a matter we wish to clarify: circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah require an intention, is that not so? No one performs circumambulation or walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah without an intention, as some scholars said: if Allah had obligated a deed without an intention, it would be a burden that cannot be borne. But does specifying the circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah require intending that one is performing circumambulation for 'Umrah or for Hajj, or walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah for 'Umrah or for Hajj? The well-known view among scholars is that specification is required, and if one forgets and performs circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah without it occurring to him that it is for 'Umrah or Hajj, he must repeat the circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah because specification is required. Many scholars, or most scholars, said that specification is not required, and they said that circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah in relation to the pilgrimage in general are like bowing and prostration in prayer; just as a person does not renew a specific intention for bowing and prostration, so this is a part of the pilgrimage. In reality, the second opinion offers ease for people, because a person often forgets; he comes, yes, he entered with the intention of circumambulation, but he was negligent about whether it was for Hajj or 'Umrah. So according to this opinion, if a person forgets to specify, his circumambulation is valid and his walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah is valid. In the hadith there is evidence that the polytheists desire the weakness of the Muslims and their lack of strength, and this is a matter that does not require establishing proof, just as they wish that the Muslims would become disbelievers [An-Nisa 4:89], [Al-Baqarah 2:109]
