A man performed 'Umrah in the month of Hajj, then returned to his home, which is at a distance that permits shortening the prayer. Is he considered a mutamatti' (one combining 'Umrah and Hajj), given that he intends to perform Hajj this year?

The questioner : A man performed 'Umrah in the months of Hajj, Shawwal or Dhul-Qa'dah, then returned to his home, and his home is at a distance that permits shortening the prayer. Is he considered a mutamatti' (one combining 'Umrah and Hajj), given that he intends to perform Hajj in the same year?

The Shaykh : Did he return from Hajj or from 'Umrah?

The questioner : He returned from 'Umrah, but he intends to perform Hajj in the same year.

The Shaykh : Did he perform 'Umrah first and then return to his home?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And he returned from his home to Mecca in the state of ihram for what?

The questioner : He wants the best option; he wants to perform tamattu' (combining 'Umrah and Hajj).

The Shaykh : Well, then he performs tamattu' a second time; he comes with a second 'Umrah and becomes a mutamatti' (one combining 'Umrah and Hajj) with the second 'Umrah.

The questioner : What about with the first one?

The Shaykh : As for the first 'Umrah, considering that he returned to his home and then left his home and entered the state of ihram for Hajj, he is a mufrid (one performing Hajj alone). This is because he separated them by the interval of residing in his home, so he initiated a new journey for Hajj. This is the well-known or reported position of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and it is the most correct.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
