Reading from the author's text with commentary and collation of manuscripts: "And when Allah forbade imitating those whose hearts had become hardened

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "And when Allah forbade imitating those whose hearts had become hardened, and He also mentioned at the end of the surah the state of those who innovated monasticism".

The Shaykh : Yes.
The reader: I have "mentioned" without a waw.

The Shaykh : And "mentioned," "He also mentioned," and I have: "He also mentioned at the end of the surah."
The reader: But you have a waw, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : No, I do not have a waw.
The reader: Should I remove it?

The Shaykh : Yes, in your version it is "at the end of the surah," "end" being singular.
The reader: "End."

The Shaykh : Fine, a manuscript.
The reader: "He also mentioned at the end of the surah the state of those who innovated monasticism: but they did not observe it as it should be observed, so He followed it with His saying:
(28) O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (29) [This is] so that the People of the Scripture may know that they are not able [to obtain] anything from the bounty of Allah and that [all] bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
[Al-Hadid 57:28-29]
"
.

The Shaykh : In His saying:
So that they may know لئلا يعلم
meaning "so that they may know," meaning "so that the People of the Book may know that they are not able to attain anything of the bounty of Allah," the "la" here is an extra particle for emphasis, as it is in His saying, the Exalted:
I swear by the Day of Resurrection
[Al-Qiyamah 75:1]
I swear by this land
The "lam" is an extra particle for attention; I mean the "la" is an extra particle for attention.
The reader: "For faith in the Messenger is his confirmation, obedience to him, and following his Shari'ah, and in that is a contradiction of monasticism; for he was not sent with it, but rather he forbade it, and he informed that whoever followed him would have two rewards, and the authentic hadiths came in that manner, from the route of Ibn 'Umar and others, regarding our likeness and the likeness of the People of the Book."

The Shaykh : in
The reader: In "our likeness"

The Shaykh : "Our likeness"
The reader: "And the authentic hadiths came in that manner, from the route of Ibn 'Umar and others, regarding our likeness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated this explicitly in what Abu Dawud narrated in *his Sunan*, from the hadith of Ibn Wahb, who said: Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-'Amya informed me:
Sahl ibn Abi Umaymah reported to him that he and his father entered upon Anas ibn Malik in Madinah, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Do not be severe with yourselves, lest Allah be severe with you. Indeed, a people were severe with themselves, so Allah was severe with them. Those are their remnants in the monasteries and hermitages, a monasticism they invented for themselves which We did not prescribe for them."
.
This is what is in al-Lawla'i's narration from Abu Dawud, and in Ibn Dasas's narration from him:
He and his father entered upon Anas ibn Malik in Madinah, in the time of 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, who was the governor of Madinah. He found him praying a light prayer, like the prayer of a traveler or close to it. When he finished the prayer, he said: "May Allah have mercy on you. Do you see this obligatory prayer, or is it something you are doing as a voluntary act?" He said: "It is the obligatory prayer, and it is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He used to say: 'Do not be severe with yourselves, lest Allah be severe with you.'"
"
.

The Shaykh : "Shaddid," do you have the Name of Allah in it?
The reader: Yes, and he said: "In a manuscript, in A, B, and T, the Name of Allah is not mentioned in the two places".

The Shaykh : So, a manuscript, yes.
The reader:
used to say, “Do not impose austerities on yourselves and so have God imposing austerities on you; for people have imposed austerities on themselves and God has imposed austerities on them. Their survivors are to be found in cells
Mishkat al-Masabih 181Isnād Da'īf (Zubair `Aliza'i)
.

The Shaykh : Their remnants.
The reader: A correction, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes, correct it.
The reader: "
Those are their remnants in the monasteries and hermitages, a monasticism they invented for themselves which We did not prescribe for them. Then he went out the next morning and said: "Will you not ride to look and take a lesson?" He said: "Yes." So they all rode, and there were dwellings whose people had perished and been destroyed.
"

The Shaykh : Perished.
The reader: "
There were dwellings whose people had perished and been destroyed, empty upon their roofs. He said: "Do you know these dwellings?" He said: "Yes, I do not know them or their people. These are the people of dwellings whom Allah destroyed for their transgression and envy."
"
.

The Shaykh : I have: He said: "I do not know them."
He said: "Do you know these dwellings?" He said: "I do not know them."

The reader: In manuscript A, B, and T, it says: "He said: I do not know them." And in Abu Dawud, it says: "I said: I do not know them."

The Shaykh : Fine.
The reader: "
He said: "Yes, I do not know them or their people. These are the people of dwellings whom Allah destroyed for their transgression and envy. Indeed, envy extinguishes the light of good deeds, and transgression confirms that or denies it. And the evil eye commits adultery with the hand, the foot, the body, the tongue, and the private parts, confirming that or denying it."
"
.
As for Sahl ibn Abi Umaymah, Yahya ibn Ma'in and others authenticated him, and Muslim and others narrated from him. As for Ibn Abi al-'Amya, he is from the people of Bayt al-Maqdis, and I do not know his status, but Abu Dawud's narration of the hadith and his silence regarding it implies that it is good in his view, and it has corroborating narrations in the Sahih.
As for what is in it regarding the description of the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as being light: In *the two Sahihs*, from him—meaning from Anas ibn Malik—he said:
It was narrated that Anas said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) like gourd.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 3302Sahih (Darussalam)
.
And in *the two Sahihs* also, from him, he said:
I never prayed behind an imam , who was more brief or more perfect in his prayer than the Prophet
Mishkat al-Masabih 1129
. Al-Bukhari added:
If he heard a boy crying he would shorten the prayer for fear his mother might be distressed.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1129
".
