Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “O my people, the dominion is yours today, and you are prominent in the land. So who will save us from the punishment of Allah if it comes to us?” Pharaoh said, “I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except the way of success.”

The Shaykh : We read the new lesson:
O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land
[Ghafir 40:29]
Consider the beauty of this man’s address. At first, he was refuting them:
Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'
[Ghafir 40:28]
But when he wanted to be affectionate with them and to make clear the favor of Allah upon them, he softened his speech and said:
O my people يا قوم
As if he were one of them. And this — meaning the softness of speech in the aspect of da'wah — is among the matters that Allah has commanded in the Shari'ah, and by which Allah guides whom He wills of His servants by decree. So Allah said to Musa and Harun:
(43) Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. (44) And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]." اذهبا إلى فرعون إنه طغى فقولا له قولا لينا لعله يتذكر أو يخشى
[Taha 20:43-44]
.
Furthermore, the decree also supports this. How many people have been saved because of gentle speech, and how many people have transgressed because of harsh speech. For this reason, you find that this man, by his wisdom, when they threatened Musa with killing, refuted them openly:
Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'
[Ghafir 40:28]
, and when he wanted to make clear the favors to them and call them to the truth, he said:
O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land
[Ghafir 40:29]
meaning dominant and elevated over its people. And his saying:
sovereignty is yours today
[Ghafir 40:29]
means that you are the owners today. Also consider the beauty of this address and the caution in:
sovereignty is yours today
[Ghafir 40:29]
meaning, and what about the future? It is not known; perhaps your dominion will be removed. But today you are in favor, dominant in the land, prominent over its people, so you must give thanks for this favor.
