The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
And he who believed said, "O my people, follow me, I will guide you to the way of right conduct. وقال الذي آمن يا قوم اتبعوني أهدكم سبيل الرشاد
[Ghafir 40:38]
In the beginning of these verses, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh وقال رجل مؤمن من آل فرعون
[Ghafir 40:28]
Here and in what precedes it, He says:
And he who believed said وقال الذي آمن
[Ghafir 40:30]
to confirm his faith and that he is truly a believer.
And he who believed said, "O my people, follow me, I will guide you to the way of right conduct. وقال الذي آمن يا قوم اتبعوني أهدكم سبيل الرشاد
[Ghafir 40:38]
O my people: The discussion of its grammatical parsing has preceded, and we clarified that it is a vocative in the accusative case, implied before the yā’ of the first-person pronoun, which is omitted for lightness. Its appearance is prevented because the position is occupied by the movement of the corresponding vowel. Good.
And His saying: "
O my people, follow me يا قوم اتبعوني
with the inclusion and omission of the yā’
I will guide you. أهدكم
"
means that there are two readings: follow me (ittaba‘ūnī) and follow (ittaba‘ūn). As for the presence of the yā’, the matter is clear because it is the yā’ of the first-person pronoun. As for its omission, it is omitted for lightness.
And His saying:
follow اتبعون
is a command, and
I will guide you. أهدكم
is the response to the command. For this reason, it occurred in the jussive case by the omission of the yā’, and the kasrah before it is evidence of it. The original form of ahdakum is ahdiyakum, but when the present-tense verb occurs as a response to a command, it is in the jussive case. It is said that it is in the jussive case because of the command, and it is said that it is in the jussive case due to an implied condition, the meaning being: if you follow me, I will guide you. And so it is said in everything that comes in this construction.
I will guide you to the way of right conduct. أهدكم سبيل الرشاد
[Ghafir 40:38]
means the path, and the guidance here is guidance by indication, because it is not possible that guidance by success is intended, since guidance by success is in the hand of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, due to His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He, to His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like إنك لا تهدي من أحببت
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
meaning you do not guide with guidance of success. So His saying:
I will guide you to the way of right conduct. أهدكم سبيل الرشاد
[Ghafir 40:38]
The path of righteousness is the opposite of the path of error. Righteousness is good conduct, and error is committing a mistake intentionally.
