Is it permissible for a man to wear shawls whose ribs are decorated with gold?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : There is also a problem here. They say that the ribs on this shawl of mine are gold. A man is forbidden from wearing gold except in cases of dire necessity, such as for the nose or the like. What is your opinion on this issue? Yes?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : If it is established that this is gold, then it is forbidden because it is decorated with gold. Some of these shawls also have stitching on them; some have two fingers' width, some three, and some four. The school of thought holds that this is forbidden and it is not permissible to wear it. They told me that Shaykh al-Shinqiti, Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him), when he first arrived in the Kingdom, was wearing a garment like this with this gold embroidery. They said, "O Shaykh, this is forbidden; this is gold." So he took it off immediately and bought something embroidered with silk, the ribs of which were silk. Silk is permissible; a small amount of silk is not a problem. However, this issue is complicated by two matters. The first is that we do not accept that it is gold. Our Shaykh, Abdul Aziz ibn Baz, told us about his Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), that they tested this and found that it is not gold. Therefore, the issue does not arise in the first place. We wear it for warmth in the winter and for adornment in the summer, and there is no concern in our hearts.
There is another opinion. If we assume it is gold, then the scholar of his time, the imam of the people of his time and after, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, says, "What is permissible of accompanying gold is the same as what is permissible of accompanying silk, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made their ruling the same. He said:
Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males. أحِل الذّهب و الحرير لإناث أمّتي وحُرِّم على ذكورها
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148Sahih (Darussalam)
Thus, he made the ruling for both the same. Therefore, what is found in these shawls does not reach the level of prohibition, because what is forbidden for men regarding silk is pure silk, and most of it is silk. What exceeds four fingers is forbidden, but if it is a mark less than four fingers, there is no harm in it regarding silk, and according to the Shaykh's opinion, no harm in it regarding gold either. But note what we mentioned first: if we say something is permissible, it is permissible in itself. If it becomes forbidden from another angle, it becomes forbidden. For example, if a man were to wear pure gold, making it a patchwork or encrusted on his coat, but if they say he is extravagant or insane, then we say, what? It is forbidden because of the extravagance. This rule applies to every lawful thing; every permissible thing that contains a forbidden element becomes forbidden. Yes? Brother Yahya.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes.
