The Shaykh : For this reason, it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
There will come a time when the best property of a man will be sheep which he will graze on the tops of mountains and the places where rain falls (i.e. pastures) escaping to protect his religion from afflictions. يوشك أن يكون خيرَ مال الرّجل غنم يتّبع بها شعف الجبال ومواقع القطر، يفرّ بدينه من الفتن
Sahih al-Bukhari 3300
. This is the division: Seclusion is better if there is evil in mixing, otherwise the original principle is that mixing is the good. A person mixes with people, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, calling to the truth, explaining to people, and that is good. But if he is unable to be patient and the trials (fitan) increase, then seclusion is better, even if he worships Allah on the top of a mountain or in the bottom of a valley. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the virtue of the man whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves, and he said:
Allah loves the servant who is God-conscious and is free from want and is hidden (from the view of people). إن الله يحب العبد التقي الغني الخفي
Sahih Muslim 2965
. The pious (taqi) is the one who fears Allah (Mighty and Majestic), so he carries out His commands and avoids His prohibitions. He carries out His commands by performing the prayer and offering it in congregation, by paying the zakah and giving it to its rightful recipients, by fasting Ramadan, by performing Hajj to the House, by being dutiful to his parents, by maintaining ties with his relatives, by being kind to his neighbors, by being kind to orphans, and by other types of piety and righteousness and gates of good.
The rich (ghani) is the one who is self-sufficient with respect to people, rich with Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with respect to anyone other than Him. He does not ask people for anything, nor does he expose himself to people by being humble or servile. Rather, he is rich with respect to people, knowing his own self and being self-sufficient with his Lord, not turning to anyone else.
Hidden (khafi): He does not display himself, nor does he care to be displayed among people, or to be pointed out with the finger, or for people to talk about him. He is hidden from his home to the mosque, and from his mosque to his home, and from his home to his relatives, to his brothers. He is hidden, concealing himself. But this does not mean that if Allah gives a person knowledge, he should hide in his home and not teach people. No, this contradicts piety. This is better than hiding in his home and not benefiting people with his knowledge, or hiding in his home and not benefiting people with his wealth. But if the matter is between displaying himself, showing himself, and explaining himself, and concealing it, then at that time he chooses concealment. But if it is necessary to display himself, then he must display it. This is from those whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves.
And in it is the encouragement that a person should be hidden, be rich with respect to anyone other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and be pious to his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He), so that he worships Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in goodness and well-being.
