Question:
From verse number 76 to verse 78 of Surat al-Tawbah. If possible, please provide a focused exegesis of these verses. Does this apply to a servant who made a covenant with Allah to abandon a specific sin, and who spoke harshly, saying that Allah would be displeased with and angry at him if he were to return to it?
Answer:
The verses referred to, which are the saying of the Exalted regarding the hypocrites:[At-Tawbah 9:76] So He caused hypocrisy to remain in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him, because they broke their covenant with Allah and because they used to lie. Do they not know that Allah knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that Allah is the Knower of the unseen? [al-Tawbah: 76-78], indicate that whoever makes a covenant with Allah to do something and then breaks that covenant has thereby adopted the characteristics of the hypocrites, and is in grave danger of being punished with hypocrisy in his heart; this is the recompense for breaking his promise and lying.
And He, the Exalted, warns His servants of the characteristics of the hypocrites through this, and He, the Exalted, encourages them to be truthful and to fulfill covenants. He, the Exalted, makes it clear to them that He knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that nothing of their affairs is hidden from Him.
And this does not preclude repentance; so whoever repents to Allah, the Exalted, with sincere repentance, Allah forgives him for all sins—whether they be disbelief or hypocrisy or less than that—just as He, the Exalted, said: [Ta-Ha: 82], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : [al-Nur: 31], and He, the Exalted, said: [al-Zumar: 53]. The scholars have reached consensus that this verse is regarding those who repent.
It is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam), and it is also authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Riyad as-Salihin 710.

But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِّمَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَىAnd turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَSay, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
It is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.
التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له(embracing) Islam wipes out all that has gone before it (previous misdeeds). Verily, emigration wipes out all the previous sins
الإسلام يهدم ما كان قبله، والتوبة تهدم ما كان قبلها
