The Ruling on a Disabled Person Leading the Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother asks and says: Is it permissible for a disabled person to lead the prayer?
Answer: The matter of disability requires detailed consideration. If the disability prevents him from bowing and prostrating, then no, it is not permissible for him to lead the prayer; a suitable, healthy person should be used. However, if he is a regular imam and is afflicted with a temporary condition, such as what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did when he prayed while sitting, there is no harm in that, provided he is the regular imam and the living imam. But if a person is not a regular imam, he should not be brought forward to lead them while disabled, praying while sitting, or not bowing or prostrating; rather, a suitable person who is able to bow and prostrate, and so on, should be sought.
As for the disabled person whose disability does not prevent him from these actions—such as a disability in his leg or hand that does not prevent him from praying standing, bowing, and prostrating—there is nothing wrong with that; it does not harm him, and there is no harm in that. Yes.
