Considering the mother's opinion in choosing a wife

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner Ra'fat 'Ali says in this question: I have proposed to my cousin, and consent was given—praise be to Allah—and now the engagement has lasted for nearly a year. However, my mother is not pleased with this engagement to my cousin. I know that this girl prays, performs the religious obligations, adheres to the Islamic covering, and stands in prayer at night. I am now confused about the embarrassment of my uncle, and confused on the side of my father as well, and I am at a loss. What is the solution in your view, O Shaykh?

Answer:
It is obligatory for your mother to fear Allah and not to prevent you from this marriage that benefits you and does not harm you, as long as the girl is as you described. It is obligatory for the mother to consent. But if there is a girl who suits the mother, and who also suits you in terms of her religion, her character, and her character; then there is no harm if you combine the two benefits. If a girl is available whom you are pleased with and the mother is pleased with; then that is better; because dutifulness to the mother is important, and considering her feelings is important. So if a wife other than this one becomes available whom the mother is pleased with; then strive for that.
As for if that does not become available; then she has no right to prevent you, and you may marry even if she is not pleased; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
And your marriage is known to contain much good and many benefits if the wife is righteous, praise be to Allah. And you should please the mother with kind words and a good manner to the extent of your ability, but if a woman becomes available whom you are pleased with and the mother is pleased with, then that is more complete and better.
