The ruling on marrying off a woman who does not pray and how to advise the father

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Her father does not pray, and he is addicted to intoxicants—may Allah protect us from that—and she has tried to advise him, but to no avail. Now he wants to marry her off to a young man who does not pray. What should she do?

Answer:
If her father does not pray, or is addicted to alcohol, or has other sins, she should not neglect advising him. She should strive to advise him and work hard for his salvation from the Fire, using a good manner and kind words. This is because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said to the son regarding his disbelieving parents:
but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindnessوَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
[Luqman: 15]. Allah commanded the son to treat his disbelieving parents with kindness:
but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindnessوَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
[Luqman 31:15]
. Abu Hurayrah and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them both) continued to strive for the Islam of their mothers with all earnestness and patience, until they embraced Islam after a long period of patience. Therefore, patience is necessary.
So she must strive to be kind to her father, consult with him, and advise him, even if he is a disbeliever or does not pray. She should not insult him or be harsh with him; rather, she should be gentle with him and call him to Allah. She should pray for him in her prayer and at times when supplication is answered, asking Allah to guide him and protect him from Satan. She should be gentle with him until Allah guides him or he dies. She must not be harsh with him; rather, she should be gentle. The father has a right, and the mother has a great right, so patience is necessary.
If it is possible for her to seek the help of her older brothers, or her uncles, or other good people to help her call him to Allah, guide him to good, and advise him, that is good. This is cooperation in righteousness and piety. She should not leave him alone. Advising him, being patient with the advice, speaking kindly to her father, and praying for him in his absence that Allah guide him are all necessary.
Q: What about marrying a man who does not pray?
A: She should not accept marriage to a man who does not pray. If he says, "I will marry her off to a man who does not pray," she should not obey him in this:
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
. However, she should only marry a Muslim man who prays. If her father says, "No, marry him off," she should not obey him in that.
