Multiplication of Good Deeds in Quantity and Quality, and Multiplication of Evil Deeds in Quality Only, Not in Quantity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Islamic Awareness Magazine for Hajj directed questions to me, among which was the following question:
Is an evil deed multiplied in Makkah just as a good deed is multiplied? And why is it multiplied in Makkah and not elsewhere?

Answer: The scriptural evidence that good deeds are multiplied in the noble time and the noble place, such as Ramadan and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, and the noble place, such as the two sacred sanctuaries, is that good deeds are greatly multiplied in Makkah and al-Madinah. It has come in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
One prayer in my mosque is better than one thousand prayers elsewhere, except the Sacred Mosque, and one prayer in the Sacred Mosque is better than one hundred thousand prayers elsewhereصلاة في مسجدي هذا خير من ألف صلاة في ما سواه، إلا المسجد الحرام، وصلاة في المسجد الحرام أفضل من مائة صلاة في مسجدي هذا
Sunan Ibn Majah 1406Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban with a sound chain of narration.
This indicates that prayer in al-Masjid al-Haram is multiplied by one hundred thousand prayers compared to any other place, and is multiplied by one hundred prayers in the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque. The remaining righteous deeds are multiplied, but no specific limit has been reported for them; the limit and explanation came only for prayer. As for the remaining deeds, such as fasting, dhikr, reciting the Qur'an, and charity, I do not know of a fixed text indicating a specific multiplication; rather, there is in general what indicates an increase in reward, but there is no specific limit.
The hadith that says:
Whoever fasts in Makkah, Allah will write for him a hundred thousand Ramadans.من صام في مكة كتب الله له مائة ألف رمضان
is a weak hadith according to the scholars.
The conclusion is that the multiplication in the noble sanctuary of the blessed Makkah is certain—meaning the multiplication of good deeds—but in the texts, as far as we know, there is no specific limit except for prayer, for which there is a text indicating that it is multiplied by one hundred thousand prayers, as mentioned previously.
As for evil deeds, the position of the meticulous scholars is that they are not multiplied in terms of number, but they are multiplied in terms of quality. As for the number, no, because Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereofمَنْ جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا وَمَنْ جَاءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلا يُجْزَى إِلا مِثْلَهَا
[Al-An'am: 160].
So evil deeds are not multiplied in terms of number, not in Ramadan, not in the sanctuary, and not elsewhere; rather, an evil deed is always one. This is from the favor and kindness of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). However, an evil deed in the sanctuary, an evil deed in Ramadan, and an evil deed in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a greater sin than an evil deed elsewhere. So an evil deed in Makkah is greater, larger, and more severe in sin than an evil deed in Jeddah or al-Ta'if, for example. And an evil deed in Ramadan and an evil deed in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are more severe and greater than an evil deed in Rajab or Sha'ban or the like.
So they are multiplied in terms of quality, not in terms of number. As for good deeds, they are multiplied in quality and number by the grace of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And what indicates the severity of the warning regarding evil deeds in the sanctuary, and that an evil deed in the sanctuary is great and severe, is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.وَمَنْ يُرِدْ فِيهِ بِإِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
[Al-Hajj: 25].
This indicates that an evil deed in the sanctuary is great, to the extent that even the intention to commit an evil deed there carries this warning. If the one who intends to commit injustice in the sanctuary is threatened with painful punishment, then what about the state of the one who actually commits injustice in the sanctuary through evil deeds and what is wrong? His sin would be greater than merely intending it. And all of this indicates to us that an evil deed in the sanctuary has a serious matter.
The word "injustice" (ilhad) encompasses every deviation toward falsehood, whether in creed or otherwise; because Allah the Exalted said:
and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoingوَمَنْ يُرِدْ فِيهِ بِإِلْحَادٍ بِظُلْمٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:25]
, so He negated all of it. If anyone commits any kind of injustice, he is threatened with this warning. The deviation may be from the creed to disbelief in Allah, in which case he becomes a disbeliever, and his sin becomes greater and his injustice larger.
The deviation may also be toward one of the evil deeds, such as drinking intoxicants, unlawful sexual intercourse, or undutifulness to parents, or one of them, in which case his punishment is lighter and less than the punishment of the disbeliever.
And if the injustice is by wronging the servants through killing, beating, taking wealth, cursing, or otherwise, this is another type. All of it is called injustice, and all of it is called oppression, and its owner is in great danger. But the injustice that is disbelief in Allah and exiting the circle of Islam is more severe than all other sins and greater than them, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ
[Luqman 31:13]
.
And Allah is the guarantor of success, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon His Prophet, his family, and his Companions.
