Q: I ask for an explanation of the meaning of this verse and clarification of the stronger opinion in its interpretation. Allah the Exalted says: [Hud: 106-108].
Does this imply that whoever enters Paradise will exit it if Allah wills? And have these two verses been abrogated by anything in the Qur'an, since they were revealed in a Meccan surah?
A: Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The two verses are not abrogated; rather, they are decisive (muhkam). And His saying, Glorified and Exalted is He:[Hud 11:107] The scholars differed in explaining the meaning of that, while agreeing that the pleasure of the people of Paradise is eternal, never ending, never ceasing, and they do not exit from it. For this reason, He said after that, Exalted is He: [Hud 11:108] to remove what some people might imagine, namely that there is an exit. They are eternal in it forever, and this gift is not cut off, meaning it is not severed. Therefore, in other verses, this meaning is clarified, and He says, Exalted is He: [Al-Hijr 15:45] Enter it in peace and security [Al-Hijr: 45-46]. So He clarified, Exalted is He, that they are safe—meaning safe from death, safe from exiting, safe from diseases and sorrows, and from all distress. Then He said, (peace and blessings be upon him) : [Al-Hijr 15:47] No fatigue will touch them therein, nor will they be driven out of it [Al-Hijr: 45-46]. So He clarified, Exalted is He, that they are permanent in it and do not exit.
And He said, (peace and blessings be upon him) :[Ad-Dukhan 44:51] In gardens and springs, they will wear silk and brocade, facing each other. Thus, and We will marry them to houris with large eyes. They will call therein for every fruit, in safety. They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will protect them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire. A favor from your Lord; that is the great success. [Ad-Dukhan: 51-57]. So He informed, Exalted is He, that the people of Paradise are in a secure station where no fear or cessation of blessing befalls them, and that they are also safe. So there is no danger for them from death, disease, exiting from it, sorrow, or any other distress. And they do not die forever. The meaning of that is that the people of Paradise are eternal in it for eternity.
And His saying: [Hud: 108]. Some of the scholars said its meaning is: the duration of their stay in the graves. Even if the believer is in a garden of its gardens and in pleasure of its pleasures, that is not the Paradise, but it is something of Paradise. A door to Paradise is opened for the believer in his grave, and he receives from its breeze, its fragrance, and its pleasure, but it is not the place of Paradise. Rather, he is transferred to it thereafter, to the Paradise above the heavens, in the highest place.
And some of them said the meaning of:[Hud 11:107] is the duration of their standing in the Place of Standing for reckoning and recompense after their exit from the graves, and then they are transferred thereafter to Paradise.
And some of them said: The intended meaning is both matters: the duration of their stay in the graves, the duration of their standing in the Place of Standing, and their crossing of the Sirat. In all these times, they are not in Paradise, but they are transferred from there to Paradise. And His saying:[Hud 11:107] means except for the time of their stay in the graves, and except for the time of their standing in the Place of Standing, and except for the time of their crossing of the Sirat. In this state, they are not in Paradise, but they are being transferred to it and traveling to it. And by this, it is known that the matter is clear, with no doubt, no uncertainty, and no ambiguity. So praise be to Allah.
So the people of Paradise enjoy it and are eternal in it for eternity. There is no death, no disease, no exiting, no distress, no sorrow, no menstruation, no post-natal bleeding, and nothing of harm forever. Rather, they are in eternal pleasure and eternal good. And so the people of the Fire are eternal in it for eternity and do not exit from it. Nor is it destroyed; rather, it remains and they remain in it. And His saying:[Hud 11:107] It was said: The duration of their stay in the graves, or the duration of their standing in the Place of Standing, as mentioned previously regarding the people of Paradise. And after that, they are driven to the Fire and are eternal in it for eternity. And we ask Allah for safety and well-being. And as He said, Mighty and Majestic, in Surat al-Baqarah: [Al-Baqarah: 167]. And He said, Mighty and Majestic, in Surat al-Ma'idah regarding the disbelievers: [Al-Ma'idah: 37].
And some of the Salaf said that the Fire has a limit and an end after thousands of years and many ages have passed over it, and that they die or exit from it. This is a saying that is of no value according to the majority of the people of the Sunnah and the community. Rather, it is false, refuted by the many proofs from the Book and the Sunnah, as mentioned previously. The saying of the people of the Sunnah and the community has settled that it remains for eternity, that they do not exit from it, and that it is not destroyed either. Rather, it remains for eternity, in the apparent meaning of the Noble Qur'an and the apparent, established Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And among the proofs of that, in addition to what was mentioned, is His saying, Exalted is He, regarding the Fire: [Al-Isra: 97]. And His saying, Exalted is He, in Surat al-Naba, addressing the people of the Fire: [Al-Naba: 30]. We ask Allah for safety and well-being from it and from the state of its people.
(106) As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling. (107) [They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends. (108) And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.
Does this imply that whoever enters Paradise will exit it if Allah wills? Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs.
And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.
And He said, (peace and blessings be upon him) :
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place;
And His saying:

They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.
And some of the Salaf said that the Fire has a limit and an end after thousands of years and many ages have passed over it, and that they die or exit from it.
