The Virtues of Spending on Kin
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from Abdullah, an Egyptian national working in al-Dar'iyyah. He says: I worked here for a full year, then I traveled to my country. I found one of my brothers very sick, so I sat by his side and spent all the money I had with him, approximately three thousand Egyptian pounds. I should mention that I have two other brothers whom I asked to help me, but they refused. Also, my father has passed away, and my mother is alive; she owns a piece of land and some money. I asked her to help me, but she refused. I should also mention that I have children and a wife, and I spend on them. My question is: If I had left the amount for my brother without receiving anything in return, would I be sinful, considering that my children need this amount? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: As for your spending on your sick brother and your care for him, this is a good, prescribed matter and maintaining family ties. You will be rewarded, so be glad of the replacement and reward from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). However, if your children are in need and your wife is in need, it is obligatory for you to start with them and their needs. As for your sick brother, you, the mother, and your brothers must cooperate in this matter, regarding his case and spending on him.
If you are able to spend on him and on your children, you will have the reward. In that case, you will surpass them in reward and attain great good. So you must look into the matter. If you are able to spend on your sick brother and on your children, do so and be glad of the good. Even if your brothers delay in helping you, and even if your mother delays, you will have the full reward, and you will be in great good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 56 This is part of maintaining family ties. You are to be thanked for your work, and Allah will compensate you for what you did with much good, provided your intention is sound. So be upright and be glad of the good. Strive to spend on your children’s needs, and on your brother according to your capacity and ability, even if by borrowing or by debt, by borrowing from some of the well-wishers, and Allah will repay on your behalf. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bulugh al-Maram 7:94 So if you borrow from some of your brothers, or take a loan from some of your brothers in order to spend on your sick brother and on your children, Allah the Exalted will help you, facilitate your affairs, and repay on your behalf (Glorified and Exalted is He). So be upright and have good opinion of your Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He). Spend on your brother and on your children, and supplicate to Allah for the mother with good and success, and supplicate to Allah for your two brothers with success and guidance, and seek help from your Lord in all good.
