The Ruling on Spending on One’s Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from the sender, Muhammad Imam Hasan, an Egyptian working in the Jawf region. The summary of his message is that he says he lives in his country in a family consisting of his parents, his brothers, and his own children. He is working here, while his brothers and his father are working there. He has two sons who are studying in high school, and his father covers the expenses of the house, the farm, and the children. He is an elderly man who did not receive an education and did not save anything for his children. So, is it permissible for me, while I am here and sending them sums of money for my father, is it permissible for me to secretly hide some of my earnings as a reserve for my children, who are my direct offspring? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.
Answer: It is obligatory for you to spend on your father, your children, and your father’s wife to the extent of your ability until you meet their needs. Whatever exceeds the need, you may keep it for yourself. However, you must spend on your father, your children, and your father’s wife, and also on his children if he has minor, weak children; then you must spend on all of them. This is part of maintaining family ties and being dutiful to one’s parents, and it is obligatory. As for if your father is wealthy and able to spend on his children and himself, then you must spend on your two sons who are with him to the extent of their sufficiency, and you should reconcile with your father in a matter that pleases him and does not cause you hardship in this affair. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
