Question:
The listener (R. M. Sh.) from Egypt sent a long message in which he says: My father divorced my mother while I was still a fetus in her womb. Then I grew up and got married, and I now have children. I live with my mother, and I do not know my father except by name. He did not provide for me, educate me, or take care of me. My father married another woman and had children from her, and they are the ones who manage his affairs and control his responsibilities, but recently...

The Shaykh: Repeat, repeat.

The presenter: The listener (R. M. Sh.) from Egypt sent a message in which he says: My father divorced my mother while I was in her womb. Then I grew up, got married, and now have children. I live with my mother, and I do not know my father except by name. He did not provide for me, educate me, or take care of me. My father married another woman and had children from her, and they are the ones who manage his affairs and control his responsibilities, but recently my father has been complaining to everyone in the city that I am undutiful to him, and that I work abroad and do not send him money, even though he is wealthy.
My question, O honorable Shaykh: Do I have the right to send him any amount of money, given the situation I described? Then he continues in his message and says: My mother is very wealthy, as she trades in many goods, and she has no children other than me. She asks me to send her money, even though my financial situation does not allow it, as my salary is modest and the responsibilities of my wife and children are many. Is it obligatory for me, despite this, to send her money or not?
And if I refuse, does this fall under the category of undutifulness to parents?
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is obligatory for you, my brother, to strive to be dutiful to your father and your mother, even if your father fell short in his rights toward you. It is obligatory for you to strive to be dutiful to him and to treat him well through correspondence, kind words, and visiting if it is feasible, and to be considerate of his feelings so that undutifulness does not occur between you two.
As for him, it is obligatory for him to be just between you and his other children; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.اتقوا الله، واعدلوا بين أولادكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587
So if he gives them, he gives you, and he equalizes between you and them, except for the ordinary maintenance he spends on them. If he gives them things like lands or cars or anything else, he must be just among you. And you, you must consider his feelings by speaking kindly, using good manners, and visiting him if possible; so that undutifulness does not occur between you two.
As for giving them money, or giving your father money, when your salary is small and not enough to suffice you and your family, and they are well off—your father is well off and your mother is well off—then it is not obligatory for you. It is not obligatory for you to send them money, but you should excuse yourself to them with kind words and good manners, and say: "O my father, my salary is small, and my responsibilities are many, and I do not have any surplus to send to you, and you are, by the praise of Allah, in a good state." And you say the same to your mother: "You are, by the praise of Allah, in a good state, and my salary is such and such, and I hope for your forgiveness." So you take their feelings into account with kind words, and it is not obligatory for you to send them money, as they are wealthy and you are in need of money. It is not obligatory for you, but handle the matter with good manners, kind words, and good correspondence so that you may win their satisfaction. May Allah guide you and make your affairs easy.

The presenter: Amen, may Allah reward you with good.
