The ruling on distancing oneself from one's parents under the pretext of seclusion for thought

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In reality, my sister, His Eminence the Shaykh, recalls a tragedy that many fathers complain about. It is what is known among many young people as total seclusion for thought and scrutiny of opinions, to the point that this has led sons to cut ties with their fathers, and some daughters as well. His Eminence the Shaykh must say a word on this, and I believe this is an invasion that has entered the youth of Islam.

Answer:
There is no power or might except in Allah! There is no doubt that this is a serious matter, and it is obligatory for the youth to fear Allah and to recognize the status of their parents and the rights of their parents, for their right is great and their obligation is significant. It is not permissible for the youth, whether male or female, to cut themselves off to obsessions and deviant, misguided thoughts. Rather, it is obligatory for the believer, whether young or old, and for the believing woman, whether a girl or an older woman, for all of them, to hold themselves to account, to fear Allah regarding their relatives and, in particular, their parents, to strive for righteousness, and to beware of the whispers of Shaytan and the stings of Shaytan.
And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ۝
[An-Nas 114:1]
the Master of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer. [Surah al-Nas: 1-4] So it is a whisper in times of heedlessness and a retreating one in times of remembrance.
Therefore, it is obligatory for all the youth, male and female, to fear Allah and to be upright upon His religion, to recognize the status of their parents and their relatives, to be dutiful to their parents, and to maintain family ties. Even if we were to suppose that the parents are disbelievers, it would still be obligatory to be kind to them. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said in His noble Book regarding disbelieving parents:
but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindnessوَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
[Luqman: 15]. Even if they are disbelievers, he must be kind to them, treat them with kindness, advise them, call them to good, and be kind to them with whatever wealth, status, and calling to Allah he is able to provide, perhaps Allah will guide them through His means.
So how much more so if the parents are Muslims, for the matter is even greater and larger. And so it is with kinship; maintaining kinship ties is among the most important obligations, and severing them is among the ugliest of major sins. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.لا يدخل الجنة قاطع رحم
Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Should I not inform you about the gravest of the major sinsألا أنبئكم بأكبر الكبائر؟
Sahih Muslim 88b
We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He said:
Associating partners with Allahالإشراك بالله
Then he said:
And undutifulness to parentsوعقوق الوالدين
Thus he made undutifulness to parents one of the greatest of major sins.
So it is obligatory for everyone, male and female, to know the status of their parents, to honor the status of their parents, and to be kind to them. Even if some shortcoming on their part regarding their children occurs, or harsh speech toward the children, or mistreatment of them, their right is still great.
So it is obligatory to be kind to them, to be gentle with them, to seek their forgiveness, and to ask for their pardon. One should interpose good people to reconcile between a person and his parents if there is any disagreement between them. One should not be repelled by his parents or distance himself from them, but rather should strive to find reconciliation and closeness between himself and his parents, even if they have mistreated him. He should bear it and look to their great right. He should interpose the good among his elder brothers, maternal uncles, paternal uncles, or others, until the difficulty is removed and harmony returns between the son and his parents, and between the daughter and her parents. This is what should be done. As for cutting ties, distancing oneself from the parents, and being heedless of them, the evil of this is great and its consequence is severe, and it is among the greatest of undutifulness to parents. We ask Allah for guidance and well-being for everyone.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
