The Ruling on a Wife’s Mourning for Her Husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner, your sister in Allah, Umm Muhammad from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, says: Is mourning the last of the husband’s rights over her? And does a woman perform it immediately after her husband’s death?

Answer:
Yes, this is one of his rights over her. She performs it for four months and ten days after his death, unless she is pregnant, in which case the mourning period ends with the delivery of the child. She must avoid wearing beautiful clothes, using perfume, wearing jewelry, and applying kohl until four months and ten days have passed. This is his right over her, unless she is pregnant, in which case the mourning ends with the delivery of the child; based on His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birthوَأُوْلاتُ الأَحْمَالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَنْ يَضَعْنَ حَمْلَهُنَّ
[Al-Talaq:4].
And among his rights over her after that is supplicating for him for forgiveness and mercy, mentioning his good deeds, and refraining from speaking ill of his character or backbiting about him. This is his right over her after death. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
