Question:
I am a high school student, and I have chosen good company for myself, but my father prevents me from walking with them and keeping their company. He told me: "I will buy you a car and you can do whatever you wish, smoke, and so on, but do not walk with these people." What is your ruling on this?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 3696, so you do not obey your father, nor anyone other than your father, nor the ruler, nor the governor, nor the husband, nor the wife, in that which contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah.
But you should keep the company of the good, and improve your manner with your father, speaking to him with gentleness and a good approach. You should apologize to him and say: "My father, such and such and such," in a good manner. These are my brothers in Allah; I study with them, I benefit from them, and I spend some of my time in their company, because this benefits me in my religion. I ask you not to prevent me from this and not to be affected by it. So you do this and that: you continue with your father through apology and kind words, and with your good companions through company, companionship, and study, thus combining the two.
So do not be harsh with your father, nor ill-tempered with your father. No, be gentle with your father, be soft earth, good in character, good in speech. Allah the Exalted said regarding the disbelieving parents: [Luqman: 15], so you must accompany them with goodness, but you do not obey them in that which harms you and in that which contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah .
